Preventive Fitness for
Lifelong Health

Preventative fitness focuses on maintaining strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance before significant decline occurs.

Sessions are designed to:

  • Support a long-term overall physical fitness and resilience.

  • Maintain muscle strength, joint mobility, posture, coordination, and movement confidence.

  • Encourage regular, supervised, safe physical activity at home and reduce sedentary hours.

This service is ideal for older adults age 60+ who want to
stay active, fit, capable, and independent for as long
as possible in a comfortable pace.

Fall Prevention & Aging-in-
Place Movement

Falls are one of the most significant risks to independence for older adults. Our fall-prevention approach focuses on functional, real-world movement that supports daily living. Sessions include structured assessments to understand current strength, balance, and mobility levels alongside general physical activity, movement and targeted exercises that prepares the body before additional support is needed.

This service includes:

  • Balance and stability training.

  • Strengthening muscles used for walking, standing, mobility aids and transfers.

  • Improving reaction time and environmental awareness.

  • Movement strategies that support safe living at home.

The goal is not intensity - it's confidence, reducing risk, moving safely, and preserving independence gently.

Physiotherapy Exercise
Follow-Through

Many receive excellent physiotherapy plans
but struggle to follow them consistently at home.

Gentle Steps bridges the gap between clinical care and everyday movement by:

  • Helping clients safely perform physiotherapy's recommended exercises.

  • Proper technique and pacing.

  • Supporting consistency and confidence between physiotherapy visits.

  • Communicating progress with physiotherapy within our professional scope.

This service does not replace physiotherapy - it supports it.

The In-Home Functional Movement Assessment

We believe that mobility and strength are just as important to monitor as traditional medical vital signs such as blood pressure or heart rate.

In aging research and geriatric exercise science, certain movement abilities are often described as “functional vital signs.” These indicators provide valuable insight into a person’s independence, fall risk, and overall physical resilience & fitness as they age.

During the Gentle Steps Initial Assessment, we measure several functional indicators that help us understand how the body is currently moving, where training can provide the greatest benefit, and monitor long-term progress or maintenance.

These measures are widely used in geriatric research, physiotherapy, and exercise science programs.

Gentle Steps In-Home Fitnessâ„¢ uses an original functional assessment and exercise programming framework designed for older adults. The approach is informed by established exercise science literature and guidance from organizations such as the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the World Health Organization (WHO), and Canadian physical activity guidelines for older adults. These references guide safety screening, functional assessments, fall-risk awareness, and exercise programming practices and determine if the current level is within our scope or medical clearance for physical activity is required.
